Louisiana Retirement Development Commission

In 1997, individuals were commissioned from across Louisiana to form the Louisiana Retirement Task Force. In 1999, based on the success of the task force, the Louisiana Legislature created the Louisiana Retirement Development Commission in the Office of Lieutenant Governor. The Legislature determined it necessary and essential to create the Louisiana Retirement Development Commission to engage in developing, promoting, and marketing Louisiana as a retirement destination (La. R.S 51:1317 - 1319).

The mission of the Commission is to develop and market Louisiana as a preferred choice for retirement to pre-retiring and retired individuals in an effort to retain and attract retirees while enhancing communities and improving the economic climate statewide.

The Plan

The Commission is guided by strategic priorities as defined in the Strategic Plan approved in May of 2006. The plan focuses on three priorities: education, marketing and development support.

Over a four-month period during the Spring of 2006, the plan was developed and guided with input from the tourism industry, economic development entities, nonprofit organizations and retirement districts. The process included: identifying strategies to accomplish the results in the Louisiana Rebirth: Restoring the Soul of America (a post hurricane strategic plan for the Office of Lieutenant Governor and the Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism); establishing innovative partnerships within and across public, private and nonprofit sectors; and developing performance indicators to track the results.
